Better World Books Donates 13,000 Books to Adult Literacy Centres in Ireland
To celebrate World Book Day, Better World Books has donated 13,000 books to 20 adult literacy projects in Ireland. The books will be used to restock old libraries and help some literacy centres create new libraries for their students. Recipients include Adult Literacy Centres, Community Training Colleges, Youthreach and Probation services in Cork, Dublin, Kerry, Limerick, Mayo, Galway, Waterford, Meath, Westmeath, Rosscommon, Tipperary and Longford.
Better World Books is a for-profit, socially minded organisation that collects and sells used books online to raise money for literacy charities around the world. Every time a book is sold, a contribution is made to literacy.
In 2011, the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) became Better World Books’ chosen charity partner in Ireland. Since then Better World Books has donated €6,000 to NALA, which NALA has given to local literacy projects to buy resources. To celebrate World Book Day this year, Better World Books donated 13,000 books to NALA to support local adult literacy projects.
“We are very grateful to Better World Books for this donation of books. Currently in Ireland there are 50,000 adults attending ETB adult literacy courses around the country. Having a library stocked with interesting books provides a great incentive for emergent readers to get into the habit of reading. By donating these books they are providing the gift of reading to many people,” said Inez Bailey, Director, NALA.
Speaking of the donation, Martin Mullin, Head of Acquisitions UK from Better World Books said, “We are a global business that sells and donates millions of books. We really value the projects that NALA are engaged in – we see first-hand the impact of their vital work. Better World Books is delighted to be able to support NALA with these donated books.”
World Book Day is Ireland’s biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. See http://www.worldbookday.com/world-book-day-ireland/for more information.
